“He was Too Honest?”

As I left the theater, some people behind me were talking about a character in the movie, saying that “He was too honest to be trusted.”

My mental reaction to overhearing that was: “You’re kidding. Too honest to be trusted?”

But then I remembered that Jesus’ opponents said something very similar about him: “Teacher, we know that You say and teach rightly, and You do not show personal favoritism, but teach the way of God in truth.” (Luke 20:21)

Yet… they opposed Jesus.
Clearly, they knew better, but somehow didn’t want to do better.
I need to look at myself to make sure I’m not doing the same thing.

“What A Knee!”

One day, I overheard heard a doctor tell a friend after surgery, “your knee’s beautiful.

To me, it was unsightly and swollen. But the doc was right.

I’m prone to think of beauty in a surface way. But the Bible speaks of a deeper attraction, of “the beauty of holiness.” (Psalm 29:2)

Thankfully, despite the fantastic beauty in our world, God sees past my scars, bruises and blunders. Past mine, and past yours.

“What ‘Speaks’ to You?”

The other day, a friend told me that his hobby “speaks to me!”
Another friend added, “that’s the way I feel at a NASCAR race!”

And yet, for me, my daily life has only a few moments of passion. It’s filled with every-day normal stuff—the “stuff” of life.
The day-in, day-out, over and over sunrise, sunset, teeth-brushing, traffic-light-waiting, bill paying-type experiences.

But truthfully, God is in even the smallest details. So I don’t need big things to make today a great day.

“Slow. Steady. Constant.”

I planted a row of bushes to become a hedge, but I have to water them. It takes over an hour to soak the roots.

So, rather than standing there with a hose, I thought I’d get a soaker hose to slowly drip water hour after hour, which is what the garden center recommended.

It’s like Paul said to Timothy: pay attention to reading…to doctrine…meditate on these things, give yourself entirely to these things.

Slow. Steady. Constant. The living water will reach my spiritual roots. It’ll change my life.

“Sleep, a Spiritual Experience”

I enjoy a nice nap every now and then. In fact, I enjoy sleeping late too.

And, I never really thought of sleeping as a spiritual experience, until it occurred to me one night, while I couldn’t get to sleep:

I’ve known some children who were afraid to go to sleep. They were afraid that something bad would happen when they weren’t watching.

When I give in to sleep, I’m giving up control. I’m trusting God. What could be more spiritual? I suppose that’s why Jesus was able to sleep in a boat in the storm!

“Pollen on My Car”

I was wishing for Spring, since the Winter was oh-so-gray. But then I began complaining about the pollen on my car.

It seems as though I’m wishing for Spring without many things that Spring really is. Pollen. Lawn mowing. And so on.

But Jesus reminds me that no gift is without responsibility: “…to whom much is given, much is expected.”
I wonder if I can find a way to enjoy washing my windshield—because I sure do enjoy spring!

“Scary Books”

I like reading spooky books.
One author wrote: “Scary stories sell because everyone fears a lot of things that won’t happen. Even things that have no chance of happening.”

Our society seems to thrive on fear and worry. We watch the news every hour of every day—in case something important happens.
But the news seldom helps us look forward to anything positive. Disaster, distrust and doom.

But, for me, the spiritual difference is that I have hope. A deep hope because, in Christ, “all things work together for good.” (Romans 8.28)

“A Useless Planet”

A friend once called Mars “an un-peopled and purposeless planet.”
I suppose there aren’t many people on Mars, but is it really useless?

I’m inclined to think not. After all, God made it and said “It is very good!”

Of course, I don’t quite know why He made Mars. But then, I don’t always know why He made me.
But Jesus said “I go to prepare a place for you,” in John 14:2, so I’m inclined to think He has a purpose for me. And for you.

“My Crutches”

I was on crutches for six weeks due to a baseball injury.

My 4th grade classmates laughed, especially since the bathroom was a problem. So, the teacher allowed me to go during class to avoid their teasing, but I had to choose one kid to go with me.

I chose the one who hadn’t picked on my weakness. He was an outcast, being the only black kid in our upstate New York school.

We became close friends. All because of my crutches.

This is what redemption is about—bringing a greater good out of something bad.

“Moldy Potato Chips”

Moldy potato chips!?! No kidding. I should’ve eaten them before they bloomed in ugly green spots.
Then my mind turned to thinking of how my love might have that “moldy flavor” too.
When my “love” for Jesus is just love for what He does for me.
When my “love” for my neighbor is actually loving the good feeling in my heart.
When my “love” for truth is, if the truth be told, love for correcting the ignorant.
But, Jesus calls me to genuine love. Love for Him, for you, and for the truth.
