“Scary Books”

I like reading spooky books.
One author wrote: “Scary stories sell because everyone fears a lot of things that won’t happen. Even things that have no chance of happening.”

Our society seems to thrive on fear and worry. We watch the news every hour of every day—in case something important happens.
But the news seldom helps us look forward to anything positive. Disaster, distrust and doom.

But, for me, the spiritual difference is that I have hope. A deep hope because, in Christ, “all things work together for good.” (Romans 8.28)

“One Up-Manship”

I was listening to mockingbirds yesterday. One would sing. The next would sing louder. Then the first would sing again even louder, but the second wouldn’t even wait for him to finish!

Like the game of One-Upsmanship: “If you think that’s good, let me tell you….!” Or, “That’s not a real problem! Let me tell you about….!”

So many times, I stop listening before you even finish your sentence.

Swift to hear—slow to speak. At least I can wait until you finish before I play one-up against you!

“Sagging Between Poles”

I was on a rural road when I noticed the power lines and poles along the road.

The line went up, then down, up, then down, like a cartoon sea serpent cruising the waves.

Of course, the line was lowest when it was farthest from the poles, and at its highest where it was attached.

And that seems a bit like my spiritual life; ups and downs, over and over.

But my life is lowest when I’m farthest from my spiritual supports: James 4:8–“Come near to God and he will draw near to you.”

“A Useless Planet”

A friend once called Mars “an un-peopled and purposeless planet.”
I suppose there aren’t many people on Mars, but is it really useless?

I’m inclined to think not. After all, God made it and said “It is very good!”

Of course, I don’t quite know why He made Mars. But then, I don’t always know why He made me.
But Jesus said “I go to prepare a place for you,” in John 14:2, so I’m inclined to think He has a purpose for me. And for you.

“The Release of Prayer”

I received an email today. She wrote: “I’m at a hard place in my life. Yesterday, I went to a small chapel. It was like I was somehow drawn.”

“I knelt there. Silently I cried hesitant tears. My heart was full, but the words I spoke weren’t the reason for my tears.

“I think that my tears were my prayer – I just couldn’t find the words.”

Romans 8:27—“Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God.”

“A Back Porch”

My daughter walked onto the back porch one afternoon. It was one of those afternoons when the weather’s warm, the breeze is on and off, but the bugs are truly bothersome.

She commented out loud that “it’s so nice to be able to be in a screened porch where we can experience the weather but we’re protected from the bugs and the hot sun. Then she turned and commented further: “It’s like that in Christ too!”
“For the shields of the earth belong to God; He is greatly to be exalted.”

“My Crutches”

I was on crutches for six weeks due to a baseball injury.

My 4th grade classmates laughed, especially since the bathroom was a problem. So, the teacher allowed me to go during class to avoid their teasing, but I had to choose one kid to go with me.

I chose the one who hadn’t picked on my weakness. He was an outcast, being the only black kid in our upstate New York school.

We became close friends. All because of my crutches.

This is what redemption is about—bringing a greater good out of something bad.

“My Connection”

My wife went to sit with an elderly Alzheimer’s patient, thinking to make some phone calls while he cat-napped. But she forgot her charger, so naturally it died.

And likewise, I find it too easy to forget my connection with Jesus sometimes.

I forget to pray, or forget to read and meditate about the word. I ignore chances to make someone’s life a little better, getting caught up in petty personal issues.

He said: “I’m the vine. You’re the branches…without me you can’t do anything.” I’ll do well to remember that.

“Disaster!”

I saw a young child very happy, holding an ice cream cone. But, he tilted it and the ice cream plopped out.

You know what happened: he wailed as if he had stepped on a rusty nail.

And what about me? In my disappointments, failures and pains, do I become like that boy? Why shouldn’t I? Everything’s a disaster!

But as a spiritual adult, God’s given me a choice.

“Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God!” (Psalm 43:5)
It makes a difference.

My Wife’s Little Dog

When our dog (Callie) goes out, she takes her own sweet time. She wanders, leisurely sniffing for other creatures that’ve trespassed.

Our young grandson tried to get Callie back into the house, running and yelling, waving his arms. But his noise and excitement weren’t very effective.

So my wife taught him about attraction—call softly, whistle a little and offer a doggie treat. Much better!

My relationship with Jesus is similar: He doesn’t drive me. He attracts me. He offers hope and salvation. I love Him because He first loved me.
